Welcome to Angela Palumbo's blog!
This blog is to serve as a course exercise in blog development.

As an educator, I try to incorporate activities and lessons that will interest my students. Currently, my students seem to be interested in local natural attractions. The purpose of this blog is to discuss beautiful local places to visit. The above picture was taken at Econfina Springs in Bay County, Florida. It is only an hour north of Panama City Beach, Florida and it takes about 2.5 hours to drive to from Mobile, AL. The river is spring-fed and features many ice-cold underwater caves that are great for scuba diving in. Canoe trips are great on hot summer days because the cold water keeps the paddling bearable!

  1. Hello,
I love that you are focusing on local natural attractions. I am now trying to figure out how I never knew about such a cool place that was so close! I think a fun place to discuss and explore with your students would be “5 Rivers.” There is so much fascinating wildlife right in our back yard! At “5 Rivers” students can canoe, kayak, and take boat rides to explore the beautiful nature around them. There are also movies, an exhibit hall, and classrooms to gather more information on the Delta. Here is a link to website that will give more information about this natural attraction!

  3. Angela,

The Mississippi Gulf Coast has five barrier islands just off its shores! Cat Island, Deer Island, Horn Island, Petit Bois Island, and Ship Island. Each island offers its own unique history! Ship Island is the easiest to visit. A passenger ferry, captained by a family friend and located in Gulfport, takes passengers to the island daily. Ship Island is famous for an old military fort, named Fort Massachusetts. I have been there many times! It is a beautifully preserved brick fortification with tons of history. It was completed in 1868, and the National Park Service offers seasonal fort tours. Also, the island has a beautiful beach and excellent swimming. It is also a great place to hike and fish! It only takes an hour to get to Gulfport, MS from Mobile, AL. The ferry ride out to the island is really fun and makes for a super cool adventure. I hope you get to go someday soon!

    1. Kevin, I lived in Daphne, AL most of my life, have visited Biloxi more times than I can count, but never knew about this! I really appreciate the post! How much does the ferry cost to get to Ship Island?

  4. I always enjoy visiting the Mariana caverns in Mariana, FL. It is the only state park in Florida to offer cave tours to the public. They are pretty awesome. The cave has formations of limestone stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, flowstones and draperies. The Chipola River and a freshwater spring provide areas for fishing, canoeing and boating.
